The Town of Blind River services the community with weekly curbside garbage and recycling collection.

View our Garbage and Recycling Collection By-law, which further outlines the storage, handling, collection and disposal of waste and recyclable materials within the Town.

We work with our contractor GFL Environmental to facilitate curbside collection services. Contact the Town at 705-356-2251 Monday to Friday or GFL Environmental at 705-356-4118 Monday to Friday if you have any questions. Please leave a message if it is outside of regular business hours.

Garbage and recycling on the same truck

GFL uses a two-stream collection truck. This truck allows for both garbage and recycling to be collected in the same truck through segregated chutes.  Please see pictures and a short video below

Garbage collection

We collect regular household waste through weekly curbside collection every Thursday. Please ensure your waste is out by 7 a.m. and is easily and safely accessible for collectors, at a maximum distance of one metre from the curb.

Garbage limits

There is a two bag limit per week, with a weight limit of 20 kg per bag. If you have any extra bags, you can purchase bag tags at our municipal office. You can bring two additional bags to the municipal landfill at no extra cost.

Using a bag tag on a garbage bag

  • Secure to the top of garbage bag.
  • Secure the bag tag around the neck of the bag. Do not use tags as a twist tie.
  • Make sure the full tag can be seen.

Yard waste

We do not collect yard waste, such as leaves, brush, grass clippings, hedge trimmings and branches, through curbside collection. You can dispose of any yard waste at the municipal landfill at no charge.

DISPOSING A MATTRESS?

There is 3 ways you can dispose of your mattress at the landfill.

  1. FREE at the landfill
If you would like to dispose of it for free you will be required to disassemble it before dropping it off.
The metal components go to the scrap metal recycling.
Remaining fabric/foam will go into the resident’s 2 free bags at landfill.
Disassembly only requires a box cutter and a hammer or mallet.

By disassembling your mattress, you are helping to extend the capacity and minimize the long term costs to operate the landfill.

2. FREE recycle or reuse the mattress components yourself.
The components inside of mattresses are almost all reusable.  See the diagram below for suggestions of applications to reuse the mattress components.

3. For a $50.00 fee
If you choose to dispose of it at the landfill without disassembling there will be a fee of $50.
This fee is charged to cover the additional capacity mattresses take up in the landfill (%400 more) and additional handling required. It is time consuming and labour intensive to handle mattresses that have not been disassembled as they are designed to resist compaction and trap landfill leachate.
